Originally called Pleasant Hill, this community began as the 30-square-mile plantation of James Monroe Smith, illustrous farmer, railroad developer and entrepreneur extraordinaire. When the plantation became economically self-sufficient, it acquired a post office and was renamed Smithonia. At the time of his death, Mr. Smith owned over 17,000 acres in Madison and Oglethorpe Counties alone, plus more land in adjacent counties. "All the land next to mine, that's all I want" he used to say...a modest man indeed.
