Crawfordville, GA (Taliaferro County). May 2007
Old Orange Crush mural on the side of Bill's Grocery in Crawfordville, GA (Taliaferro County), taken in May 2007. The building has since been torn down and sadly, the mural no longer exists.
Orange Crush was a zesty orange drink created in 1916 by Clayton J. Howell and Neil C. Ward. It became so popular that by 1919, the company was able to pay artist Norman Rockwell to paint print advertising for the leading magazines of the time. but its popularity has declined in the second half of the 20th century.usageorgiasmalltown georgiacrawfordvilletaliaferro countyorange crushmuralvintage advertisingorangeamericana

Royston, GA (Franklin County). 2007
Baseball legend Ty Cobb was born in nearby Banks County, GA, in 1886. He started out his baseball career as a member of the Royston Rompers, the Royston Reds and the Augusta Tourists. He joined the Anniston Steelers (Alabama/Tennessee) in 1904 after being cut by the Tourists. He played for the Steelers for $ 50 a month until heavy self-promotion resulted in his being hired back by the Tourists; in 1905 he was sold to the Detroit Tigers for somewhere around $ 600 (bargain!). In August of that year, his mother shot his father dead - imagine that! A case of mistaken identity/self defense, she was cleared a year later. According to Cobb, the early death of his father made him the ferocious player he became known to be, always trying to please his late father.
Nicknamed "The Georgia Peach", Cobb is one of the greatest baseball players of all times. At the time of his retirement in 1928, he held 90 baseball records of which he still holds several today. Cobb's legacy as an athlete has sometimes been overshadowed by his surly temperament, passionate racism and aggressive reputation which was described by the Detroit Free Press as "daring to the point of dementia."usageorgiasmalltown georgiaroystonfranklin countydowntown districtfranklin springs streetu.s. 29ty cobb muralty cobbbaseballsmalltown pridearchitecturewindowsbench
