Macon, GA (Bibb County) April 2008
In the 1880s, Emil Tyden, a Swedish immigrant, invented a railroad car seal known as the Tyden Ball Seal, to prevent theft and pilferage, and moved from Chicago, IL to Hastings, MI to found the International Seal and Lock Company and mass-produce the patented seals with the help of an automation system that he also developed.
When a fire destroyed his factory in the 1920s, Tyden switched into the sprinkler business. Tyden bought out a St. Louis company that had developed fire sprinklers and valves and under the name of the Viking Corporation started manufacturing them in Hastings, MI.
Both the Viking and Tyden companies still produce sprinkler systems and cargo seals respectively, today.
